While reading my Fairy Tales and Fantasies textbook on the way home from class last night, I learned that, for me, Little Red Riding Hood will never be the same again. My lovely childhood world of fairy tales has been shattered. (If you would like to retain your innocence – STOP reading now!) In the introduction to the numerous versions of the tale, the author says this: “First of all, this is not a real wolf — and arguably neither child nor adult reader ever takes him as such.” I would just like the author to know that I DID! Reading the tale now with the knowledge of who the wolf really is, I am disturbed and distrustful of all that I held dear. I’m not so sure about this class now… Stay tuned, there may be more lurking in the pages of my textbook that is better left unknown – that of course I will have to share!
