As an elementary school teacher, choir director and a church music degree holder, Then Sings My Soul Special Edition is an excellent resource. It is important that people understand what they are singing, and to understand the reason behind a song’s composition adds another level of understanding. This knowledge can help a vocalist to better communicate the message of a song and bring a deeper meaning to the ones participating in worship.
Robert J. Morgan tells the story of the composition and/or the composer of 150 hymns from common favourites to some that are almost unknown in some denominations. Each hymn story begins with a Scripture and a date. The significance of the date is not explained, but my guess is that it is the original publication date. It is also helpful that the book has the same common indexes found in a hymnal – alphabetical by song, by author/songwriter, and by first line. Some of the hymn lyrics date back to the early church in Rome and the Medieval Era and show us that the cry of the Christian’s heart has remained unchanged throughout history. I appreciated the reintroduction of original verses that are no longer included in our hymnals. Yes, some of these verses would be deemed socially unacceptable today, but still carry the profound message of the gospel.
I enjoyed this book and will use it as a resource in the church and the classroom for years to come. For any Christian who has a song in their heart, this book will add harmony to their melody with the knowledge of how that song came to be.
I give this book 5 stars out of 5.
